What makes a good foundation?
A foundation begins with the soil beneath it. Sometimes terra firma is not near ground level. When a foundation is founded in unstable soils, differential settlement occurs.
If a house is built over soft soils, engineers typically design a deep foundation to ensure support.
Avalon Structural installs drilled pier foundations (deep holes with rebar and concrete) as well as helix foundations. Owners, engineers, and contractors are finding helix piers make sense in many construction applications.
(Note that the term ‘helix pier’ is equivalent to ‘helical pier’.) We install both square shaft and round shaft helical piers and tiebacks.
This is our 5 1/2″ diameter round shaft helix pier. Our pier sizes range from 1 1/2″ square shaft to 5 1/2″ round shaft. Where stout columns are needed, we have installed these 5 1/2″ helical piers. Larger piers are also available.
Most applications call for 2 7/8″ round shaft helical piers.
For hillside foundations, round shaft vertical helix piers with square shaft diagonal helix piers are more cost effective than drilled piers.

We had used Avalon previously for another, even larger project, and so we knew right away when our driveway retaining wall failed that we wanted to use them again. This most recent experience with Avalon involved building two long driveway retaining walls and when we received a reasonable bid from Roger Pase, company owner, and started the work, we found the project operations to be absolutely smooth sailing.
Avalon employees are all unbelievably competent, professional, hard workers. They were courteous and kept the job on schedule and cleaned up after.
As the project progressed, Roger was a champ at communicating clearly and he let us know when any matters came up that needed to be discussed. We highly recommend Avalon Structural to anyone who needs such work done.
We think these guys are the best. Professional, friendly, considerate, clean, on time, hard workers and experts in their field. And not only that, it was a complex job and it worked. Our garage is no longer sliding towards the creek. Roger, the owner is a really nice person, and Terry, his foreman, rocks! We were very pleased how they left the property when the job was finished, paying attention to small details after a very big job.
I have used Avalon Structural on two large projects. Both projects were challenging because of the slope conditions of the sites. But Avalon crew under their foreman Terry Fitzpatrick did a great job.
