Thomas Kern has been operating Santa Cruz County Builders since 1989. We specialize in residential remodel and client satisfaction. Thomas personally works on every job as well as manages all aspects of the work and details in order to successfully start and most importantly finish each project. I had Thomas do a lot of work on my new home, including completing an inside wall and installing a pocket door, re-wiring some electricity, making my stairs safe, installing a retaining wall, creating and installing custom-built cabinets and appliances, removing one closet and creating a walk-in closet, etc.
Thomas and his crew were honest, fast, and reliable. He supported and added to my creative ideas, was easy to work with, and collaborated well with my painter regarding scheduling and timing. He stuck to his timelines and obviously values a job done right. His work was thorough, and he even did some extra things for free without me having to ask, like clearing my roof from all the redwood droppings, sweeping up leaves and installing curtain rods.
Thomas is also familiar with working with homes that have been red-tagged by the county, getting them into good condition to meet the required local standards.

Thomas Kern and his Santa Cruz County Builders did a remodel of our home that transformed it from a 1980′s modern two-story ranch to my dream home. They replaced our failing siding and recommended new material that is going to last a lifetime. They replaced windows that were failing and reduced our heating bills substantially. They fixed a nagging leak that no one had been able to locate or solve. Our house is now one of the nicest on the block instead of the ugly duckling. Thomas helped us with decisions at every step of the way and his advice was invaluable. He also recommended and managed quality subcontractors for our project. The front of our house was built around 1933, a living room, kitchen, bathroom, and two bedrooms. Two additional bedrooms and two additional bathrooms were added in 1967. Unfortunately the addition didn’t fit well with the rest of the house, the hallway to the back of the house dropped about 1/2 inch where the old and new joined. The front of the house lacked insulation. The hallway also did a strange left, right turn to get to the back bedroom. In 2003, we hired Santa Cruz County Builders as our contractor to do a complete remodel, everything down to the bare walls. Indeed, walls were moved to enlarge the back bedroom and add a dining room, the old garage was a rest home for termites, it came down and a new one built further back on our lot to create additional outside sitting areas, the back yard was leveled and partially paved, the old concrete drive was replaced with pavers, and the front yard was enhanced with boulders. We’ve all seen remodels that stick out like a sore thumb, what really pleased others in our neighborhood is that the house, though completely new and enlarged inside, retains the 1933 look from the outside, hence it fits in with the rest of the area. Thomas handled all of the paperwork and permits with the city-planning department. Once the physical work began, he was on site every day, overseeing and working along side his crew. The crew took great pride in their work, even making suggestions for improvements as the work progressed. We were also very pleased with the subcontractors from the PJ the paver, Brian the painter, Marcus the tile guy, and Terk the roofer. At the end we were so pleased that we threw a BBQ as a thank you to the crew and the subcontractors. Would we recommend Thomas Kern and his company, Santa Cruz County Builders? Highly and absolutely.
